WHO’S DRIVIN THE BUS? – CLAIMS MANAGEMENT

Who is running your business?  Is it the worker, the doctor, the WCB, or is it you?  Did you know that a doctor cannot decide if your worker is “off” work due to injury?  It is your business and that is your decision.

By attending this course, you will:

  • The importance and basics of investigating incidents and creating modified work plans for injured workers

Have the skills to:

  • Establish a procedure for handling injury claims that places you in control.
  • Establish processes designed to keep the best interest of the business and the injured worker in mind
  • Challenge those outside of your business who do not cooperate with established procedures, and those who attempt to interfere in bad faith

Getting your worker back to work as soon as possible is your most important job in this process.  The longer they are away from work, the less likely they are to ever return.

SUPERVISORS MANAGING SAFETY

Did you know that supervisors can be held criminally liable for negligent behaviour? This training provides supervisors with the tools and techniques to become more effective as a leader in workplace safety. This training is designed to prepare you for the worst, while striving for the best!

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • Your role regarding health and safety, including your legal responsibilities to meet due diligence requirements

Have the skills to:

  • Competently supervise your staff, using positive reinforcement and discipline as needed
  • Compare your supervisory style to that of a “good supervisor” (as defined by your group), and use the given tools to help improve your style

INCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Poor incident investigation is the most predominant problem in our industry! Combining truly proactive inspection processes with well-established and effective investigation tools bestows participants with the ability to uncover root causes of workplace injuries. Lacking these processes in any organization will lead to consistent and potentially dangerous or fatal consequences. By conducting regular safety and equipment inspections you are ensuring the safety and quality of life for yourself and all workers.

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • Direct, indirect, and root causes, and understand how to prevent all causes from ever happening again
  • The injury prevention purpose of tracking incident statistics, including near miss reporting

Have the skills to:

  • Complete an incident investigation report competently, from the instruction and practice you will be provided with
  • Prepare, conduct, and evaluate a workplace inspection
  • Use your knowledge of “causes” from incident investigations to determine corrective actions for issues spotted during your inspection

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION & CONTROL

True injury prevention starts and ends here!  By identifying hazards before they become injuries or property damage, you will not only be saving fingers, toes and lives; you will be saving money!

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • The different types and locations of hazards
  • The hierarchy of controls, including the pros and cons of each type of control

Have the skills to:

  • Use a simplified tool to determine the priority of each hazard
  • Assess if the controls that are in place are being effective, and how to make them more effective
  • Facilitate the creation of  “safe work practices” and “safe job procedures” in situations that will require the use of them as hazard controls

Safe work practices and job procedures should be created by your workers, for your workers.  Involvement from the you front-line staff or associates is the best way to ensure your workers believe in working safely, and take their responsibility to protect themselves and others seriously.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

The boss needs to believe it.  Without your senior managers believing in safety and promoting the program, it will certainly fail.  General managers, human resources, safety professionals, and anyone else involved in creating and implementing your safety program is invited to this effective overview class.

SPECIAL SERVICES

AUDITOR TRAINING

Safety audits are a cost-effective method of measuring existing management systems. This program provides education necessary to effectively evaluate the health and safety system your company. This two-day program is designed to provide training to those who will be evaluating your company’s health & safety program. Participants must have an understanding of health and safety management systems before enrolling in this program. All auditor candidates are required to have a working knowledge of field operations and possess strong communication and analytical skills.

Pre-requisites: Safety Management Systems, Who’s Drivin’ the Bus? (Claims Management)

AUDITOR SERVICES

SHSA offers a wide range of audit services such as perception survey services all the way to full Certificate of Recognition (COR) award. Requests would be evaluated on individual basis.

SAFETY EVALUATION SERVICES

SHSA has developed a safety evaluation tool to help members improve their safety programs. A typical safety program is made up of 11 elements. This evaluation tool uses three procedures – documentation, observation and interviews – to evaluate these elements.

PERCEPTION SURVEY

Do you “walk the walk or just talk the talk?” An overall view of what employees  see, think and experience within your organization. This survey is done to give an understanding of your health and safety system. This discrete feedback will provide guidance to understand and meet your employee needs.

SHSA LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS

This full day training combines four of SHSA’s already established and effective safety-centred training programs. This training provides new and existing managers clear and concise information about their roles and responsibilities as a guarantor of workplace safety.

The default courses included are:

  • “Who’s Drivin’ the Bus?” (Claims Management);
  • “Incident Investigation & Inspections”;
  • “Hazard Identification & Controls” and
  • “Supervisors Managing Safety”

However, if you would like to trade one of the suggested courses for another SHSA course we can work with you to determine which combined training courses will best suit the current and future safety needs of your business.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS

WHMIS for MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS

Did you know the law does not say how often your workers should be trained on WHMIS?  Employers are required to provide all workers with an understanding of the hazards they may be exposed to, and how to work safely in those situations.

Working at the speed of your business, this Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training provides managers and supervisors with the required knowledge to teach in house WHMIS training.

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • The basic concepts of WHMIS including its purpose, WHMIS visuals, and Material Safety Data Sheets
  • The legislation surrounding WHMIS, including training and documentation requirements

Have the skills to:

  • Evaluate the training needs of your workers, and learn how to evaluate understanding and application of the information you are teaching
  • Train your workers on the hazards that they could be exposed to, and how to work safely when in contact with those hazards

For on-site presentation, a minimum charge of $200.

MAKING YOUR SAFETY COMMITTEE SHINE!

Did you know that your committee can do more than get that cracked toilet seat repaired? Your safety committee was established (by law) as an in house safety expert service, designed to talk about safe workplace practices and implement them from the ground floor up. Since having a safety committee is your legal obligation, why not make it shine?

By attending this course, you will:

  • The responsibilities for each committee member and co-chairperson
  • The legislation surrounding committees, from formation to quarterly meetings

Have the skills to:

  • Make your committee shine, by employing techniques learned, and by utilizing the resources given

In our industry we rarely have designated “safety” positions.  It is often left up to human resources, operations, or the general manager in smaller organizations.  Ask any of these people and they will tell you they don’t have any time to spare!  Utilizing your committee to proactively make your workplace healthier and safer is a smart business decision.

YOUR SAFETY COMMITTEE AND THE LAW

Does your committee need a tune-up?  They know the basics but need some direction?

Having a safety committee is the law in Canada. But do you know how to effectively use your committee and the laws that govern it? By law every employer must provide all committee members with proper training in their duties and responsibilities associated with creating an effective and safe work environment.

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • The responsibilities for each committee member and co-chairperson
  • The legislation surrounding committees, from formation to quarterly meetings
  • Direct, indirect, and root causes, and understand how to prevent all causes from ever happening again

Have the skills to:

This training will provide your organization insight into which staff members require additional safety training.

LADDER SAFETY

In 2011 our industry saw nearly 300 fall injuries! Many of these falls happened from a ladder or a stepping stool that was being improperly used. This course provides your workers with the proper ladder procedures: turning a ladder into a useful tool, rather than a potentially dangerous one.

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • Different types of ladders and when each should be used
  • The legislation surrounding ladder use, size, and style

Have the skills to:

  • Select the right ladder for the job
  • Work safely while using a step or extension ladder

For on-site presentation, a minimum of 10 people will be required.

NEEDLE & INFECTIOUS BODY FLUIDS SAFETY

Needles and infectious body fluids are a danger not only at work but also out in the community, in parks, swimming pools, and public washrooms.

By attending this course, you will:

Gain knowledge of:

  • Your legal responsibilities surrounding infectious body fluids, including the creation of an “Exposure Control Plan”

Have the skills to:

  • Empower your workers to be proactive and avoid potentially dangerous situations
  • Introduce, facilitate and create site and situation specific safe work practices (eg. How to properly dispose of a needle)

Using what you have learned from this course, you can ensure your workers don’t unknowingly endanger their well-being while doing routine tasks.

For on-site presentation, a minimum of 10 people will be required.

FIRST AID/CPR TRAINING

The SHSA offers First Aid/CPR training program.  Rebates of $50/person will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
