Why Your “Wellness Program” Won’t Save You in a Crisis
The wrong time to be prepared for a crisis is when you’re in it.
Many Saskatchewan employers believe they are addressing mental health because they have a policy, informative posters and lunch-and-learns, and offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Dr. Bill Howatt calls these “random acts of wellness.”
While well-intentioned, these programs often fail because they lack capacity. Even if you’ve provided your staff training, if you don’t correct for the “forgetting curve,” you haven’t actually built a safe workplace.
Humans Helping Humans (Without the PhD)
In our latest Before It Breaks Podcast episode, Dr. Howatt and CEO Carrie Bjola dove into the Crisis Ready Workplace model. The goal of this program is not to turn your managers into clinical psychologists AND you do not to diagnose anxiety or depression.
All you need to be is a lifeline.
What Does a Crisis Actually Look Like?
It’s not always an armed assailant or a loud confrontation. Often, a crisis is covert. It looks like:
- An employee staring at a corner for two hours, unable to move.
- The “adversity load” of food insecurity or a messy divorce finally boiling over.
- A teammate suffering in silence because they feel devalued after a meeting.
The Challenge: Build the Structure
Service Hospitality is proud to be a partner for the Crisis Ready Workplace. We are bringing this accredited certification to our members because we’ve seen what happens when the system fails. We are calling on senior leaders in Saskatchewan to stop saying they care about mental health and start training the right people to respond when it matters most.
