That’s a wrap on Youth Safety Education Day 2024!
On September 10th, 2024, the Honourable Don McMorris, Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety with the Government of Saskatchewan, declared Youth Safety Education Day for the 13th consecutive year. This special day emphasizes the importance of youth and future workers in Saskatchewan, driven by concerning statistics, such as the heightened risk of workplace injuries for individuals under 25. Notably, 75% of young people secure their first jobs in the service and hospitality industries, often progressing to more hazardous occupations later. That is why Youth Safety Education Day is crucial; when young individuals receive health and safety education in their formative years, they are significantly more likely to champion a culture of safe and healthy workplaces.

To ensure the success of Youth Safety Education Day, the backing of our sponsors and partners is essential. This year, we gained support from 200 schools, employers, and sponsors, impacting over 30,000 youth and future workers. We organized three highly successful events focused on high school students in the Saskatoon Catholic, Regina Catholic, and Prairie Spirit school divisions. These events featured a prominent speaker in the safety industry, Candace Carnahan, who shared her Step Up Your Safety presentation, which included her personal story of a traumatic workplace injury at the age of 21, directly engaging with over 1,400 youth in a meaningful and impactful way. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our esteemed guest dignitaries, including representatives from each school division, the provincial government, and the Service Hospitality board, for their attendance and for highlighting the significance of workplace safety.
Engaging with over 30,000 young people through our events and partnerships is a remarkable achievement that highlights the strength of a collective effort in our province, where we come together to prioritize workplace safety. Our goal is to enhance safety in Saskatchewan for our employees, students, children, nieces, nephews, neighbours, and everyone in our communities.
Each year, Youth Safety Education Day continues to grow and adapt as we strive to make a more significant impact on youth across the province. We eagerly anticipate achieving even greater milestones for Youth Safety Education Day 2025!
